Trade in old games, get new games for less

3/14/2009

Your children want to be entertained. They like movies and books. But chances are they really love playing video games. Financially speaking, that’s not a bad thing. Games provide a good bang for your buck.

But there’s probably a pile of old games just sitting around. Put these games to work. Some stores let you trade in used games. You’ll get store credit. Then you can buy your kids new games for less.

There are a few places where you can trade in games. These include GameStop, Game Crazy, EBGames and the newest addition, Amazon.com. (GameStop owns EBGames. Their stores and policies are identical.) So, which is the best?

Trade-In Value

The biggest factor in your decision will probably be trade-in value. How much are you going to get for used games?

Trade-in value is always changing. A game’s popularity and age have an effect. It can be tough to pin down which has the best deal. And you won’t find a full list of game values online.

Amazon is the exception. You can search through all games it’s currently accepting for trade. And you’ll see the exact trade-in value.

GameStop and Game Crazy also have preferred trader programs. They offer the Edge Card ($15 per year) and the MVP Program ($10 per year), respectively. Both give you 10% extra on trade-in value. They also offer discounts on used purchases.
