Using GPS to watch the kids

6/9/2007

Children are great. I have one of my own, so I know. But when they turn 16, they slide behind the wheel. That's great for them. But it's not so fabulous for their parents.

Every year, 6,000 kids aged 16 to 20 are killed on the roads. What a horrible, horrible toll!

Hopefully, technology will soon begin to reduce these numbers. GPS units have been available for some time. They allow parents to track their kids. In some cases, they let parents know if their children are speeding.

Insurance companies offer help

Now, at least one insurance company is getting involved. AIG Auto Insurance is subsidizing the purchase of GPS units in several states. This is a pilot program, so it's only available in Arizona, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Washington.

Parents can see what the kids are up to via the Web. They can even receive notifications on their cell phones.

These units will tell parents where their children are. They will notify them when their kids speed. They will even let them know if the car is outside a pre-determined boundary.

That sounds like a good deal. But you don't have to move to one of those six states. Nor do you have to do business with AIG. You can buy a unit yourself. Let's take a look at what's available.
