Children today grow up in a world of instant and continuous communication. Texting, instant messaging and blogging are a few of the ways kids stay in touch.
Parents need to be aware of what children are saying and doing online. But that's easier said than done. Instant messaging in particular is a stumbling block for many parents. The abbreviations and acronyms are more cryptography than conversation.
The root problem is this: Even the most computer-savvy kids are still kids. They often lack awareness of online dangers, like child predators. Blog sites consistently illustrate how willingly children open up online. So you need to know your children's language online.
The following is a list of instant messaging lingo. It's not exhaustive. However, I've included many acronyms that are warning signs for parents.
