Cellphone radiation risks hidden by government health officials

Cellphone radiation risks hidden by government health officials

Fear of cellphone radiation effects on the human body is nothing new and the public is constantly warned about the possible consequences of regular exposure to wireless signals.

Several studies have been conducted that claim to show that men who regularly kept their phones in their pants pockets have lowered sperm count.

There are also a few studies establishing a direct link between regular cellphone use and tumor growth.

None of these studies are conclusive so far and the wireless industry is inclined to say that the public need not worry, everything's all well and good.

Maybe so, but this previously hidden government-issued document may give you pause and think about the effects of cellphone radiation a bit more seriously.

State officials from the California Department of Public Health recently made a previously hidden draft document accessible to the public. The document titled "Cell Phones and Health" is an advisory about the dangers of cellphone radiation exposure and ways to reduce its effects.

The two-page document, dated April 2014 and marked "Draft and Not For Public Release," was ordered to be released by a judge due to a 2016 lawsuit filed by Joel Moskowitz, a director at University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health.

According to the document, "cell phones, like other electronic devices, emit a kind of energy called radiofrequency EMFs (electromagnetic fields)."

EMFs are defined by the same document as a type of radiation created by all electronic devices. The paper asserts that while cellphones emit relatively weak EMFs, they can affect nearby cells and tissues because "they are used frequently and kept close to the body."

The document links certain types of brain cancer and fertility problems to cellphone use:

"Several studies have found that people with certain kinds of brain cancer were more likely to have used cell phones for 10 years or more. Most of the cancers were on the same side of the head that people usually held their phones. Although the chance of developing brain cancer is very small, these studies suggest that regular cell phone use increases the risk of developing some kinds of brain cancer. Some studies have also linked exposure to EMFs from cell phones to fertility problems."

Additionally, the document states that exposure to a cellphone's EMF depends on "your distance from the phone, the strength of the EMF, and how long and how often you use the phone." Basically, the farther away the cellphone is from your body, the less the exposure.

It also lists situations when a cellphone's EMF signal is the strongest:

  • At the start of a call, when the phone is trying to connect to a cell tower
  • When a cellphone only has one or two bars
  • When in a moving car, bus or train (as the phone switches from one tower to another)
  • Some phones produce stronger EMFs than others

How to reduce cellphone EMF exposure?

In a section titled "What can I do to reduce my exposures to EMFs from cell phones?", the document then offers some recommendations.

First, increase the distance between your cellphone and your body by using the speaker phone or a headset (Bluetooth headsets have weaker EMFs). You can also opt to send text messages instead of calling.

Second, it advises you not to sleep with your cellphone nor carry it in your pocket or directly on your body unless the phone is off.

Third, the document recommends limiting your cellphone use when reception is weak. As previously mentioned, EMFs are stronger when your cellphone only shows one or two bars. If this is the case, try increasing the distance between you and the phone by using the speaker or a headset.

Furthermore, the paper recommends to keep cellphone calls short (use the speaker phone for longer conversations), take off wireless headsets when not in use and to not rely on gadgets that claim to shield or neutralize cellphone EMFs.

Cellphone EMFs and Children

The same general tips for reducing EMF exposure outlined above are applicable to pregnant women, children and teens.

In a separate section, the documents warn that children and teens are more sensitive to EMF exposure since EMFs "can pass deeper into a child's brain than an adult's" and the "brain is still developing through the teen years."

It recommends that parents limit their children's cellphone use to "texting, important calls, and emergencies" only.
