Watch out Amazon! There’s a new way to get free TV shows and movies

Let's face it, with the number of streaming services out there, it's difficult to justify the hefty monthly bills from cable and satellite providers. Services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon even have original programming on top of everything else you can stream. These services offer a less expensive alternative to cable and you can save hundreds of dollars a year.

Adding an HD antenna to your system will even let you receive local channels for free. Since saving money is the ultimate goal by cutting the cable cord, paying for services might not seem like a great idea. Good news, there is a new, free movie and TV service that has thousands of titles to choose from.

Vudu is offering a free, ad-supported streaming service to its content. Vudu is owned by Walmart and has been around for nearly a decade.

Since its inception, Vudu has been a place to rent and purchase HD movies and TV shows. In an effort to increase revenue from older content, Walmart has decided to let people access several thousand premium titles. The only catch is you will have to watch some ads.

Vudu's new ad-supported service is similar to Crackle. What sets Vudu apart is its high-quality HD content, which is the same content you'll get with the free service. It was the first service to integrate 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos Audio.

The downside is Vudu Movies on Us will not include new releases or current television shows. Those titles will only be available through its premium-priced options.

Walmart surveyed some of its customers and found over half of them were interested in watching a free, ad-supported video service. The company thought about developing a video-on-demand subscription service but decided to focus on the ad-supported service.

Here is where you can watch Vudu:

  • Vudu - You can stream Vudu directly from its website.
  • Smart TVs
  • Smart Blu-ray players
  • Connected-TV devices - Roku, Google's Chromecast and certain video game consoles are all options on which to watch Vudu.
  • Apps - Vudu apps are available on both Android and iOS gadgets.

If you are like millions of other Americans and decide to cut the cable cord, you might want to get a streaming media player. Here is a helpful breakdown of streaming media players that are out there.
