Back in the early days, we had tiny hard drives. Of course, we thought 10 megabytes was a lot. Nonetheless, we were careful about housekeeping. We didn't want duplicate files hogging the drive.
Nowadays, hard drives are the size of Montana. And, like that great state, they have a lot of empty space. Nonetheless, duplicate files continue to offend me. I must have order!
On my hard drives, I have countless music files. (Thank you, iTunes!) And I have even more photo files. I make copies when I edit either. So it doesn't take long to accumulate duplicates.
What to do? What to do? Well, I like to search 'em out with DoubleKiller. This handy program gives me a list of my dupes.
I hunt them by size and content. Of course, I check them first. They could be different, even though they look the same. But generally they're just duplicates. So I get rid of them.
I also remind myself that I need to organize those hard drives. 'Course, there are only so many hours in the day!
Most of us are up to our ears in multimedia files. So do yourself a favor. Clean out your dupes with DoubleKiller.
Stick with files that you created. System files are often duplicated. There's a good reason: They're needed in multiple places. You don't want to delete them. Worst case, you could seriously harm your computer.
