Powerful free anti-virus

Powerful free anti-virus

I've said it a thousand times: Never go without virus protection on your computer. I read stories every day from folks who've lost hundreds of gigabytes  - and dollars - to malware.

Don't take the risk!

Every second you go without a solid defense is a second that viruses could be stealing your bank passwords or account information. If you don't have anti-virus, or your subscription has expired, today is your day to download a new one.

AVG AntiVirus Free is a very good option. It's one of the very best anti-virus suites around, and it won't cost you a penny. This program is updated often to protect against emerging threats.

Warning: If you have an anti-virus program you're happy with, do not install another one. Anti-virus software will conflict with other anti-virus programs. Your computer won't be happy.

Download Instructions

To download AVG Antivirus, navigate to the AVG download page. You will see a list of blue download links in the center of the page. These are different download options according to your OS specifications.

I recommend using either the 32- or 64-bit link, depending on your computer. Most computers can run the 32-program just fine. Click the appropriate link and your download will begin.

When you install AVG, you'll see a screen during the process offering to install the AVG toolbar. This is a safe add-on for your Web browsers. It may help protect you against online threats, but it will change your browser settings.

This is enabled by default, so if you don't want it you'll have to uncheck the boxes. If you click "Next" without paying attention to what you're doing, you could unwittingly change your browser settings.

AGV will also offer to upgrade to the paid version. It's called AVG Internet Security. You don't have to accept a free trial or the paid offer. You can continue to install AVG without paying one cent.

The installer will guide you through the process. Once installation is complete, allow AVG to update itself and then scan your computer. You should also schedule daily or weekly scans.
