You can't stay safe online without powerful security software on your computer. Fortunately, powerful doesn't always equal expensive.
avast! Free Antivirus blocks viruses and spyware. The free version also includes a remote-access feature that allows a friend to help you out.
The paid version has a more powerful sandboxing feature, secure online payments, a firewall and spam-blocking tools. The free program should be enough for most users, though.
During installation, avast! will try to install Google Chrome, which is one of my favorite browsers. If you don't want to download it, however, make sure you deselect that option. It also requires e-mail registration.
The free version is intended for home use only. Don't use it for your business computers.
If you like avast! on your computer, you can also get it on your mobile gadgets. Click here to find out how.
To download avast! Free Antivirus, navigate to the download page using the buttons provided. You will see a small list of download links.
Windows users should click the link at the top of the list that says "avast! Free Antivirus." Mac users should select the bottom link that says "avast! Free Antivirus for Macs."
You will be navigated to a new page and your download will begin. Once the download is finished, run the installation package.
There are a couple of add-ons to this software. Be sure to uncheck the first box advertising for Dropbox. You want to be sure to back everything up with Carbonite, anyways.
I also recommend using the default installation settings. To do so, click the large blue button that says "Regular Installation." Be sure to read the Terms and Conditions before you install. That's a good thing to do for everything that you download!
Your installation will begin immediately. When it is finished, click the blue button labeled "Done" to launch avast! and keep your computer protected.
