There's plenty to like about Microsoft's new Web browser

If you use one of Microsoft's Web browsers, you're far from being alone. More than 45% of Internet users worldwide use either Internet Explorer or its newer Edge.

IE and Edge have a lot of competition these days. In fact, Google's Chrome (37%) is expected to become the most-used Web browser sometime this year. Plus, Mozilla's Firefox (12%) and Apple's Safari (5%) are becoming more popular.

Which is one reason why Microsoft launched Edge last summer. Edge is meant to be a modern Web browser that's faster and safer than IE, and has functionality more in line with Chrome and Firefox.

Although Edge has a few shortcomings, notably privacy issues and the lack of extensions, there are several reasons to sign up. (It's free to download, so there's no harm in experimenting with it.)

Here are some of Edge's best features:

1. Fast. Edge, which Microsoft designed for its new Windows 10 operating system, often loads websites faster than IE and other browsers.
