If you're like a lot of Americans, you care about what's going on in your neighborhood. You can watch the news on TV, but even the local channels rarely cover what's going on where you live.

Your newspaper might cover big news in your neighborhood, if a major crime or accident occurs there. Otherwise, everyday crimes like burglaries or break-ins go unreported. You may hear sirens nearby and have no idea what's going on.

So, your neighbors and you might volunteer to walk around your neighborhood, as a watch group, just to keep tabs on your neighborhood. Or, better yet, you might buy a police radio scanner.

Although they can be bulky and pricey, with some going for $100 or more, they get the job done. You can overhear your local police and fire departments' radio communications. You can hear live reports about crimes or fires that affect your family.

There is a better alternative, though. It's Microsoft's Police Radio Scanner. It's free. It lets you listen live via MP3 streaming to police departments around the country, the world, and in your neighborhood.
