The Metropolitan Museum of Art, headquartered in New York City, has some of the most incredible free online resources for art lovers available on the Internet. Now it's increased the number of free art and art history books available online for no charge.

The free eBooks span "five decades of Met publications on art history," and you'll find everything from a vintage guide to the museum itself, to da Vinci's anatomical drawings and books on artwork that traveled the ancient Silk Road routes.

Many of the 448 Met publications available on its website would cost $100 or more for a hard copy. But it costs nothing to peruse this immense collection online or download individual PDFs of the books to read on your desktop, tablet, eReader or phone.

After clicking the link below, you can search by topic or keyword, and when you find a book you like, simply click on "more." From there, you can read the book online or download a PDF for whichever device you plan to read it on (nearly every device, from Nooks and Kindles to phones, tablets, laptops and desktops have built-in software to read PDFs).

If those 448 books aren't enough to keep you busy, peruse over 200,000 works of art from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
