No matter how organized you keep your digital files, there are always a few that seem to go missing. Don't worry; it happens to the best of us.

Maybe the files got put in the wrong folder, or maybe you're doing some troubleshooting and need to find a file hidden in an obscure location.

A good place to start is with Windows' built-in search. In Windows Vista and 7, it's as easy as clicking the Start button and typing the file name where it says "Search."

On Windows 8, just slide the mouse over to the right side of the screen, hit the Search icon and type away. Or if you're already on the Start Screen, just start typing.

While the Windows search system is decent, there are times you might want something a bit faster and more powerful. Maybe you don't know or remember the full file name. Perhaps you want to search for recently updated files or files that you use the most.
