Having a social media account like Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram and others is a great way to keep you connected with friends and family, but there's something sinister lurking beneath the surface.

All those games and quizzes that you play on Facebook? They can get access to your location, your contacts, your photos, your inbox and even act on your behalf.

That's nothing to sneeze at. These are all bits and pieces of your personal information that when put together create your entire online identity.

It doesn't stop at Facebook apps, either. There are plenty of other apps that you use on your smartphone, tablet and desktop browser that wiggle their way in to your personal information, with or without your permission.
