I know that I've said this a lot, but it's so important I'm going to say it again: You have to secure your Wi-Fi! There's no excuse for an unsecured Internet connection.
Why? Here's a real life lesson in what can happen when your Wi-Fi is not password protected. Last month, a Pennsylvania woman's home was raided by police looking for child porn that had been shared over her Internet connection. Problem was, no one in her home was involved in child porn.
Turns out, her across-the-street neighbors were mooching off her unsecured Wi-Fi network. Even worse, one of them was using it for child porn. The neighbors were arrested on computer hacking charges and the porn investigation continues.
"This is a prime example of why people need to secure their wifi networks," the district attorney's office wrote in a news release. "An unsecure wifi connection - that is, one that doesn't require a password to connect - is an open invitation for others to essentially steal a service that you're paying for. At best, it's just an inconvenience because it can slow your own connection to your router; at worst, you have a case like this where the thief is using your Internet connection to commit a serious crime."

Of course, there are still ways people can sneak onto your network if you aren't careful. The trick is catching them red-handed.
