Everyone has musical artists and genres that they like. However, the usual fare sometimes gets old. That's when people go looking for new musical material.
The Internet makes it possible to explore new genres and artists. You can discover music that you might never have heard otherwise. In some cases, it's free.
The Free Music Archive is a good example. This site was founded by WFMU, a radio station in New Jersey. It combines the music collections of several prominent freeform radio stations.
There are thousands of songs divided into many genres. These are as wide-ranging as classical and trip-hop. All the music is licensed under Creative Commons. That means it is free to listen to and download.
Most of the music is independent, or "indie." Quite probably, you have never heard any of it.
Each contributing artist has a biography page. There are links to artists' Web sites and live concert schedules. You can also make PayPal donations directly to them. This allows you to support music that you like.
Notice: We give Web sites a "heads-up" before mentioning them in our Cool Sites of the Day. Still, my newsletters generate so much traffic that Web sites sometimes become unavailable. If you are unable to access today's Cool Site now, please try later. It is a working site.
Webmasters:
