Has this ever happened to you? Your computer stops working in one way or another, and when you call your IT guy he walks you through ways to troubleshoot. But in the process, he asks you the question you've been dreading the whole time: Can you tell me your IP address, please?

You might be wondering, "My what?" The letters sound like a foreign language, but they do stand for something. Your IP address, or Internet Protocol address, is how your device identifies itself on a network.

In the same way you have a legal name and a social security number, your computer, smartphone, tablet and other web-connected devices have an IP address.

But the next time your IT guy asks for your IP address, don't sweat it. Finding this information is actually easy.

We could spend an entire article explaining how to pull up the IP address for every device, but there's a faster way that's actually easier to remember.

A site called WhatIsMyIP.com will tell you what your IP address is instantly. Add it to your bookmarked webpages so you can pull it up whenever you need it. If you're not sure how to bookmark pages, click here.

What Is My IP? also lets you test the speed of your internet connection and provides helpful tips on hiding your IP address. This is beneficial if you'd like to browse the web using public Wi-Fi.
