Google introduces next generation of self-driving cars
Waymo

The Google self-driving car project started in 2009 and has been growing steadily ever since. Once a few states passed laws permitting driverless cars, the company began to test drive in 2012. Then, over 7 million people watched the new technology allow a blind man to get behind the wheel again.

To continue growing, some major changes had to be made. What was a project underneath Google is now an independent company called Waymo.

Waymo, which stands for "a new way forward in mobility," is a self-driving technology company. Their mission is to "make it safe and easy for people and things to move around." It's under Alphabet Inc., which is Google's parent company.

At this point, it seems Waymo will remain a tech company instead of transitioning into a car manufacturer. Google teamed up with Ford in 2015 and Chrysler earlier this year. They've just unveiled self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans.

Production of the vehicle began in October and about 100 minivans will be added to the Waymo fleet. Their goal is to have the vehicles on the road in 2017. Watch the video below to learn more about Waymo.
