With all of the ground-breaking innovations over the past couple decades, it truly feels like we're living in a futuristic world. Just think of everything you can do with a smartphone that fits in the palm of your hand. These gadgets are the gateway to so many aspects of our lives, it's hard to imagine life without them now.

That's just the tip of the technology iceberg. Another giant leap for mankind will be in the form of the autonomous vehicle. In fact, some of these self-driving cars are already on the streets.

One great feature of an autonomous vehicle is the added safety it provides. Not only does a car on autopilot help prevent distracted driving, but there are also safety features built-in. Some include auto-steer, cameras located on all sides of the vehicle, sensors and a front radar.

You're not going to believe how this Tesla vehicle prevented a crash. This dashcam footage shows how the vehicle's autopilot feature takes over even before the driver could see an accident was about to occur. Check out this amazing video:

As you can see in the video, the self-driving car predicts a crash before it's humanly possible. First, we hear a series of beeps from Tesla's Forward Collision Warning system. Then the car applies the emergency brakes on its own.

As the Tesla begins to stop, the vehicles in front crash into each other. This safety feature prevented the Tesla from slamming into the other vehicles involved in the accident. Outstanding!

This incident happened in the Netherlands. The cars were traveling about 65 miles per hour on a highway when the crash occurred. No injuries were reported in the crash.

This is exciting technology and will help make for a bright future. For more details about autonomous vehicles, listen to our podcast with the head of the Google self-driving car project and industry experts discussing the benefits and shortcomings of driverless cars:
