Wireless outdoor speakers
If you go with Bluetooth speakers, look for class 1 Bluetooth; it yields the greatest range. This is not to be confused with the different versions of Buetooth (e.g., 1.2 and 2.0). For more information on the classes of Bluetooth, visit my site.
Also, in order to get stereo in audio, the speakers and computer must support A2DP. A2DP is a Bluetooth profile; profiles help Bluetooth gadgets communicate.
Any speakers you buy will support A2DP. However, your computer might not. Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) does not support A2DP; OS X 10.5 (Leopard) does support it.
Of course, you could purchase a Bluetooth adapter for your iPod. This would let you transmit music to Bluetooth-enabled speakers.
Anycom makes the BIWAS-20 stereo speaker. It claims a range of up to 260 feet. Street price is about $130.
I recently wrote a column on A2DP and listening to music wirelessly. You’ll find it extremely helpful if you are intent on pursuing Bluetooth-enabled speakers.
