Security cameras

Security cameras are a great idea. You can check in on your house when you’re at work or on vacation. And they can also ensure your safety when you’re at home. Several types of cameras will work. First is the basic Webcam. It plugs in to your computer via a USB port. It can record audio and take snapshots at regular intervals. You could probably even watch remotely via an instant messaging program.

This isn’t very handy. First, the cameras require a computer. They might be feasible if you only want to watch one room. But you can do better.

You’ll also find Webcams designed for surveillance. These run upwards of $200 per camera. But they’re worth it.

There are two kinds of security cams: wired and wireless. I would opt for wireless. That way you won’t need to run cables all over your house.

Once they’re connected to your network, they’re assigned an IP address. An IP address is a number that identifies computers or gadgets on the Internet. Since it has an IP address, you can see what’s going on anywhere you have an Internet connection. Your home network should be attached to a high-speed Internet connection.
