Graphics tablets
Graphics tablets have been around for some time. They haven’t gained widespread popularity. However, many graphic designers, illustrators and photo buffs use them. Graphics tablets are often simply referred to as tablets. But don’t confuse them with tablet PCs.
Graphics tablets allow you to use a special pen to mimic mouse movements. But, coupled with the right software, they can do so much more than a mouse.
There are different types of tablets. They all have a grid of wires below the surface. A special pen transmits a signal to the tablet. The type of signal will vary depending on the type of tablet.
The kind you want has a pen that transmits electromagnetic signals. The pens do not require batteries. Advantages to this type of tablet include features such as pressure sensitivity and pen tilt.
With these types of tablets, you can also use different types of pens. The tablet recognizes that the pens are different. Even identical pens can be customized; the tablet will recognize them as distinct.
There are several different companies that make graphics tablets. Adesso and Genius are two. But Wacom has much of the market. It offers a full line of graphics tablets and accessories.
