Learn how to type

The hunt-and-peck method of typing must be really tedious. I've been typing for so long that I can't imagine using it.

I learned to type the old-fashioned way. I took a typing class when I was a student. I think taking a class is the best way to learn. You'll get help from a professional, plus a little encouragement.

If you have to go it alone, many resources are available. You'll find both software and Web sites that will train you.

I'd start with a free Web site. There are many sites that provide free typing lessons. For instance, try Senselang. It starts with the basics and lets you know how fast you're typing. You can also download the program for free.

PowerTyping and Typing-lessons.org are two other sites.

You'll also find a number of programs. I've never used this software, so I can't offer an opinion.

Broderbund's Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing is probably the best known program. Typing Instructor Deluxe and Cosmi Perfect Typing Essentials are two other programs.
