Buying a security camera
Look for network cameras (also known as IP cameras). Most network cameras can operate and provide footage over the Internet without a computer. This allows virtually unlimited camera placement options.
There are plenty of network cameras on the market. However, prices can range from $200 to $2,000. Stick to the lower end for basic home surveillance. Network camera makers include Panasonic, D-Link and Axis.
Panasonic sells its BL-C20A for just under $200. The camera can upload footage to its own Web page, which may be password protected. It can also be set to record to your hard drive. It can even send snapshots through e-mail. It can connect wirelessly to your home network.
D-Link offers a larger selection of network cameras. The DCS-950G sells for about $190. This wireless camera captures both audio and video. The footage can be viewed online or recorded to your hard drive.
For around $300, you can get the DCS-5300G. It has motion-sensing capabilities. You can remotely control pan, tilt and zoom. The included software allows you to control multiple cameras.
