Tools to protect kids online
Are you looking for filtering software to block bad sites and protect your children online? A number of programs will help you filter Web sites. Here are a few:
• SafeEyes: Runs on both Windows and Mac, $50 per year. It filters sites, email and instant messaging, keeps logs, and sets time limits. Keeps detailed reports. It can be customized for different ages.
• CyberPatrol or Net Nanny: In addition to filtering Web sites, set time limits for your children to use the computer each day. It can also be used to block file-sharing and chat programs. It sells for about $40. But remember, filtering comes free with AOL, Earthlink, or MSN.
• Spector Professional: A $99 program that will actually take snapshots of your computer's screen—emails, chats, IMs, keystrokes, etc are recorded too. These snapshots are stored privately for you to view later. The program also records visited sites, chat logs, emails, and even keystrokes. Reports can be sent via email.
Even without filtering software, there are sites that are child-friendly. To learn more about safe Web searches for the kids, read my tip.
