Home wireless routers
When it comes to Internet access throughout the house, it's hard to beat a wireless network. There's no need to string a bunch of cables around your home.
A wireless network lets your computer hop online, if it is in range. Check your e-mail by the pool. Or, as in my case, look up a recipe in the kitchen.
Here are important considerations when selecting wireless gear:
Internet Connection
You need a high-speed Internet connection. A cable, DSL, fixed-point wireless, or satellite connection will work.
Router
An access point/router connects your network to the Internet. This is installed where the Internet connection enters your home. You do not need to have a computer connected to it. For example, my access point/router is installed in my garage.
To configure the router's settings, connect your laptop to it. Alternatively, access the router through your Web browser. The router's instructions will explain either.
You may also need adapters for each computer. These communicate with the access point/router. Desktop adapters come as internal cards. Or, you can use external adapters that connect via USB ports.
